Diagnosing TMJ Disorders?
While most dental panoramic film will give you some indication of TMJ disorder, they are generally regarded as having low sensitivity and excel only mainly in the case of gross pathoses. Cone Beam CT presents as an alternative to the panoramic film as well as Medical CT due to its higher resolution and lower radiation dose. The scans are advantageous in extensively demonstrating the condition of the cortical plate and in detecting osteophyte formation.

Teeth in occlusion
Scan demonstrating the head of the right condyle sitting within the glenoid with a well defined subcortical radiolucency.

Mouth Open
Scan demonstrating the extent of degenerative changes present in the condyle with tiny osteophytes and erosion of the cortical plate.
